Business meeting with engaged team

As we conclude our Motivation Monday series featuring ideas from my most recent book Work That Works, I invite you to take part in an exercise that we greatly value at Emergenetics®: personal reflection.

Taking time to look back can have a powerful impact on your future. Research conducted at a call center showed that employees who spent 15 minutes considering the lessons learned from the day performed 23 percent better than those that did not. In a study of commuters in the United Kingdom, researchers found that those who reflected during this time were happier and more productive.

After our meetings at Emergenetics, we encourage staff to share their thoughts on the experience they had, their present feelings, what they have learned from the conversation or what they are most looking forward to.

As a final exercise for our Work That Works series, I will share a few reflection questions for you to consider regarding Principle #7, Love: Care for Your People and the Profits Will Come.

In my previous blog posts on this principle, I shared how presence and gratitude can help you build a culture of love in your office. I would also encourage individuals to consider how communication can impact your workplace environment.

Communication is essential to business and the way we interact with team members, colleagues and staff can affect how they see themselves, how they value their work and ultimately how they feel about the organization.

This week, I invite you to take 15 to 30 minutes to reflect on the following questions:

  1. Do you walk the halls of your workplace and engage with others?
  2. Do you communicate openly and warmly?
  3. Do you answer questions with transparency?
  4. What steps might you take to improve in any of these areas?

These questions will help you better understand how you presently show care for your people through communication and identify solutions to inspire greater connection as well as demonstrate your appreciation for your colleagues. I hope this exercise also inspires you to begin the practice of reflection and incorporate it into your daily routine as you continue to strengthen your leadership practices.

Thank you for being part of our Motivation Monday series! I trust that these blog posts and Work That Works have been useful and have given you new ideas to strengthen your company culture.

As we close out our series, I’d like to leave you with a final wish to inspire your continued leadership journey: live in the truth of who you are, be present, show gratitude and experience joy.
